EDGE IN MOTION

- Snehal Dhumal

Forces : Pond edge as an active edge. The tidal rise and fall of the pond, which erodes and deposits soil along its edge. Vegetation roots grip the loose soil, filtering water and stabilizing the shifting ground.

Provocation : A shelter that dissolves the boundary between architecture and landscape.  The land itself rises and folds to form a planted cover, allowing vegetation to grow above and around the built form. The shelter becomes an extension of the terrain — a hybrid of earth and structure — where the roof is alive, and the walls are softened by plantations. The idea of shelter emerges from the idea of the pond edge — a place where land, water, and human life constantly interact. The edge is not a fixed boundary but a living system that filters and holds, both physically and spatially. The soil of the pond filters water and supports life; similarly, the architecture filters activities, light, and movement. Spaces are arranged along the gradient of human activity — from open and collective zones near the water to more enclosed and introspective areas above. This creates a sequence of experiences that follow the natural rhythm of the edge: cleaning, working, gathering, resting. The slope becomes the form, rising from the land to hold a shelter above, while remaining porous and connected to the pond below.
