SETTLEMENT STUDIES

We carried out a detailed settlement study in the village named Khijadiya near Jamnagar, Gujarat, with the aim of understanding the village's layout and overall development. The study began with a walkthrough of the village, where we interacted with the local residents to observe their routines and learn about their daily lives, traditions, and community practices. These conversations gave us valuable insights into the way people connect with the surroundings and how the settlement has evolved over time.
After this initial exploration, we were divided into groups to focus on the specific aspects of the village. The groups included Village plan , Landscape, Settlements, Economy and Social Structure. Each group worked on documenting , analyzing and interpreting different layers of the village's physical and social aspect.
I was part of the group that studied housing in the village. Our focus was on understanding the the types of  houses, their construction methods and the way they respond to the local needs.
There were total 6 housing groups with 3 members each. Our group selected the house owned by Leelaben. She was a widow who lived with her father-in-law. She had a 3 room house with a small courtyard in the front. She also had a tractor of her late husband parked in the courtyard.

  SECTION

Through sketches and discussions with the residents, we tried to map the housing patterns and identify how they contributed to the overall character of the village. WE observed how houses were arranged within the settlement, their relationship with open spaces and how design reflected practical requirements.
This study helped us see housing not just as individual structures but as an important element in shaping the identity, lifestyle and social interactions of the community.
