waiting space
My site in this module was Mandapeshwar Caves , Borivali west. Our first task was to visit and observe the site and make plan and sections of it.

Site photographs
Hand drawn sections
We then had to make drawings based on our individual observation of the site forces. My observation was the movement of the Temporal crowd. There are 3 types of crowd that are seen everyday on the site: Devotees, Tourists and Locals. This crowd is seen at different times of the day. I started drawing the routes that they take and the most used and occupied spaces by these different crowds.

While studying these observations I captured the interesting movement of the locals and specially the tourists towards the top of the caves to the ruins above the cave. So I made a diagram tracing the path used. Along with it I also studied the slope that leads through this path.

Location of the intervention : From my observations and the drawings I came up with the placement of the waiting room along the curve on a slight slope which stretches and joins the cave curve roof. This gives an user an experience of the bodily movement along a curve which leads them from a plain surface to the start point of the cave roof.
The curve placed partially facing the main caves so that the temporal crowd gets wide view of the entire place ; cave entrance and the path to the ruins above it.
Idea of waiting and program : The concept of a waiting room is an open, inviting environment where individuals can pause and engage socially. The design is a waiting cum play space tailored for the temporal crowd - visitors who gather for short durations. This space has a comfortable seating for rest and conversation, allowing people to relax and interact. At the same time, it includes play areas that can be enjoyed by both children and adults.
